The H4 is the example of an all-in-one device that delivers a very large array of functions without sacrificing ease of use or quality. The price is amazingly small thanks to Zoom's ability to produce custom-designed DSP chips.
What does it do?
It's a digital stereo handheld recorder:
The size of a large walkman, it records uncompressed (PCM WAV) or compressed (MP3) digital audio on stamp-sized SD cards.
Recording quality: up to 24-bit at 96KHz in stereo or 16-bit at 44.1KHz in 4-track mode (16/44.1 uncompressed is the quality of audio CD's).
The top LCD display delivers recording level informations, files management and settings.
Its two built-in microphones form an ORTF-type stereo system designed to render a precise sound spatialisation.
Running on two standard removable AA batteries: no battery headaches.
An external power supply is also included.
Studio microphones can be used in place of the on-board pair. Two combined balanced XLR+jack connectors are available with 48v power for condenser mics. The connectors are also compatible with Hi-Z guitar jacks.
A windshield and an adapter for microphone stands are also included
It's an ASIO USB audio card:
ASIO is a professional audio driver used to provide low-latency communication between pro audio softwares and the audio hardware. It completely bypasses the computer's operating system's audio engine. NB: ASIO exists for PC & Mac but only Windows ASIO drivers are available for the H4.
Connect it to a computer's USB port: it will appear as an external hard drive and an audio card.
Drag and drop the audio files directly in your audio editing program or your sequencer: Cubase LE virtual studio/sequencer included for XP and OS X.
It's an effects processor and 4-track pocket studio:
The real-time on-board DSP processor serves different purposes:
-applying microphone models on the built-in stereo mic pair.
-simulating guitar amplifiers and effects: plug a guitar's jack in the H4, a pair of earphones and rehearse on different types of virtual hardware
-compressor/limiter: keep your recording's dynamics under control
-studio effect: reverb, delay, pich shifting, phaser, flanger

In 4-track mode, 2 tracks can be recorded in PCM WAV at 44.1KHz with a 16-bit resolution while 2 are played back.
This provides a way to do on-the-field overdubs or rough mixes.
